Thank you so much. Your thoughts hit at the root of public resistance to our collective advancement intellectually. We love somehow to defend being mediocre because it allows us to feel comfortable. Critique of the quality of Lee Callender's pushes us towards excellence, and the challenge to improve makes us feel uncomfortable. Lee's Grandfather, Timothy Gibson's demand for excellence rings in my ears 50 years later, "Ninety-nine is not good enough".
He chastised me with that when I celebrated what I thought was a good grade in an exam, where but for carelessness, I could have had a perfect score.

This is a very thought provoking discussion. I agree that, generally, we have come to accept mediocrity and tend to become offended when constructive and honest criticism is offered. For instance, I recently watched an episode of the Bahamian Idol show where one of our foremost musicians, Lee Callender, was offerinig constructive criticism, and the audience objected. It did not matter to them that the contestant sang off pitch and the judge was giving advice on how to improve. While there are individuals /groups who work hard and strive for excellence in the arts, far too many are satisfied with copying other cultures to the detriment of our own. The quality of much of the so-called "Bahamian" music that is played on the radio is deplorable. I also agree that the cry of "Dey rob us!" is too often shouted. We must learn to accept decisions, learn from them and strive to do better the next time around.
